I think I am going to make this film a litmus test on all the first dates, at my age, I am never going to have. Whatever your motivation I strongly suggest you watch this.

It is a pleasant surprise! Ironically, it doesn't seem that a great amount of meaning can be easily extracted from the film's intentions. It was as if Black's script was simply written to easily "lose" and simply give up near the end.

However, with that being said, if one searches for it hard enough, one thing which the film did somewhat exemplify was how true it is that we do too often see "educated" individuals lacking common sense and deep wisdom and the "uneducated" actually leading the way in regards to wisdom while abstaining from a mindset of folly.

One more positive that can be taken from the movie, although not necessarily purposefully presented, is the the fact that it truly does all come down to individual free will and whether or not the individual will decide to have a positive or negative outlook.

The desired direction often results in the outcome. The Sunset Limited highlights that some people that really could "have it all" refuse to accept it while some that could actually have a reason to be pessimistic are determined to push through it until they arrive where they truly wish to be.

This is a hidden Gem I was so lucky to find on Prime. Conversational movies like this a 12 Angry men leave you meditating on it long after the end credits roll.

It definitely an interactive movie, where you find yourself telling at Samuel Jackson through the screen to say this or that.

A must watch. Awesome Movie. Had me glued from the very beginning. Not your typical movie, more like a psychological drama set and based on one scene.

Both actors did a great job in their portrayals of their respective characters. Very interesting till the end.

The script is flawless, the interaction of the characters on the topic of the point and pointlessness of existence runs deep and you really have to be able to take it as an existential topic because it is way too easy to identify with their perspectives.

I'm a fan of both actors and this was a truly deep run of human water and spirituality and logic, I totally Understood both sides, but have always been more of Jone's type of character since birth.

We're all made different. In this film, it comes in the form of someone who has spent a lifetime intelligently and logically asserting that reality.

I gave this film five stars for having the balls to place that antagonist at the forefront of the narrative, with another character trying desperately to understand and resolve it.

Anyone who has struggled with existential depression will be intrigued by the simplicity of the narrative and the ideas flowing through the discussion.

Some great ideas are at the forefront, such as the difference between the doubter and the seeker, education as a path to greater misery, the infinitesimal existence of our being against the cosmos.

Jackson is a standout as one of the rare on-screen preachers without a sense to preach, instead just speaking from life as he sees it. He also does a tremendous job of conveying the urgency of the situation vacillating from joking ex-convict to concerned preacher and even to utter desperation to keep the other man in his apartment.

From the very get-go, I appreciated how the film immerses you in the reality of the apartment these men occupy. The film purposely withholds the catalyst for why these men are where they are.

It makes sense that you are limited to only the perspective these men provide about the situations, calling upon you to decide which side you favor.

As the narrative continues, you witness a gargantuan battle of ideas rather than people, each ideology trying to one up the other.

Do any of their ideologies have unresolveable contradictions? Will black logically convince white that hope exists beyond the Sunset Limited?

Will white logically convince black that the Sunset Limited is the best end for all people. For anyone who is receptive to the battle of ideologies, this movie is absolutely fantastic.

To introduce things like characters fighting each other would seem counterintuitive to the urgency of keeping that at bay.

This is why we see one character encourage another character to stay in the apartment more than force him to, realizing its his ideology he needs to conquer, not his body.

The film concludes with a fundamental existential realization of one character whose ideology is grim and foolproof, utterly beyond hope and logical reasoning.

I admire the ballsiness of this choice, positioning the character who wanted to save the other as inadequate. Ultimately, such an idiosyncratic end leaves you thinking further about the progression of the narrative.

Could the discussion have gone differently to convince the man? Was he ever in a position to find a reason to live?

In short, I'd say the film was pretty great. It was brilliantly acted, well-shot, enlightening, and thought-provoking.

This movie based on a play deals with 2 different men that are brought together by Devine fate. As one man battles with his demons contemplating suicide the other man tries to offer his spiritual advice to convince him that his life has some value.

Excellent video and audio quality. You do not want to be disturbed watching this. Very intellectually absorbing. I have to say I'm impressed that Tommy Lee Jones chose this subject matter to produce.

This was a two man play, without any supporting characters, variety of sets or special effects. It's just two strangers engaged in a conversation about things that matter.

He and Samuel L. Jackson managed to keep me engaged through the whole ninety minutes. I was a little disappointed in the end, as I thought Jackson's last lines were somewhat weak, but that's about the script.

The story and the presentation are far removed from the typical Hollywood treatment. This is a thought provoking screen play, not light entertainment, or the kind of action packed adventure in which we usually see these men acting.

See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Report abuse. Two amazing actors, one of whom is the director, bring to life a Cormac McCarthy play.

What you get is simple brilliance! The dynamics of Tommy and Samuel is so refreshing to watch. The verbal duelling is delicious like the pot of soup Sam makes, and Tom's weary life is like that fading chair.

I must say I enjoyed it when the couch and chair freudian part takes place; very nice. TMDb Score. Tommy Lee Jones. Tommy Lee Jones as White.

It would be great to show this to a group of friends and then listen to the discussion it provokes. Better yet watch this on a first date you would really learn a lot about the other person pretty quickly.
